Ash Barty v Elina Svitolina Head to Head

This will be an exciting encounter in more ways than one but more so because the two have played five times and Svitolina has won it every time. This includes the 2017 Wimbledon, 2018 Miami and 2019 Indian Wells, which gives an insight on how much of a hold that Svitolina has had over her opponent at various times in her career.

Brilliant End Needed to a Brilliant Season for Barty

A world number one ranking, a win-loss of 57-13, three of her six career titles and a maiden Grand Slam trophy win.

That’s been Barty’s 2019 and how she would love to round it off with a crowning WTA Finals title to go with that. A proper end to a season that has mostly gone the way she would have envisaged.

No surface has caused her too many problems; on clay she was 11-2 including that major win, on grass, she won eight of her nine matches. And in her first tournament of the season on indoor courts, she has taken to it like fish to water. There was a shock loss to Kiki Bertens in one of the matches in the group stage here but victories over Belinda Bencic and Petra Kvitova took her to the semifinals and a comeback-from-behind win against Karolina Pliskova in that knock-out match took her to the final.

Even if she doesn’t win this, Barty has done enough this year to deserve her number one rank but how she would love to cap it off with a victory having lost a final in her last tournament at the China Open earlier this month.

Can Svitolina End the Year on a Bitter-Sweet Note?

Five titles in 2017, four in 2018 and Svitolina would have expected to have an equally good season in 2019, may be even go on to win her first major. Forget Grand Slam, there was no title victory for her, and a win-loss record of 39-21, which at best can be described as above-average for a player of her calibre.

And when she lost in the round one at the competition in Moscow earlier this month, many had written her off from this WTA Finals, not expecting her to surge ahead the way she has.

Three wins in the group stage, all of which were straight sets victories, and then a three-setter against Belinda Bencic led her to the final but what’s telling was the fight she showed in some of those wins. Against Karolina Pliskova in her opener, her tie-breaker lasted 26 points but she edged ahead, before winning another 22-point tie-breaker against Sofia Kenin.

Can she push Barty in this one?
