Roger Federer v Alexander Zverev Head to Head

Zverev leads the head-to-head 4-3 having won the two most recent meetings at the Shanghai Masters 1000 this fall and the year-end ATP semi-finals in London in 2018.

Federer and Zverev travelled across Latin America in November of this year playing a five match exhibition series in different countries with Federer winning the series 3-1, with the match in Bogota being postponed (likely to March 2020) as a result of violence and curfew in the city.

Federer Eyeing Exhibition as 2020 Warm-Up

Roger Federer typically heads to the Australian Open, having spent some time in Australia and played in some of the warm-up tournaments. In the last three years, the Swiss has played the Hopman Cup and met with a good amount of success, that has served as the ideal warm up for the first major of the year, in Melbourne.

The Hopman Cup timing has since been replaced by the ATP Cup and Federer has announced that he will not participate in the ATP Cup this year, giving himself more time with the family in the off season. The Swiss will thus  be heading to the Australian Open without a warm-up tournament, that will seem unchartered territory after recent times.

Although Federer has talked about focusing more on practice in the offseason and using his two decades of experience to back himself at the Australian Open, he will definitely look to use this exhibition series as a warm-up before heading Down Under, especially given a quality opponent like Zverev.

Zverev Looking for Form & Confidence Ahead of Season Down Under

After a positive 2018, which ended with Zverev winning the ATP Tour Finals and saw his ranking move as high as number three at different points in the year, it was a less positive 2019 for him. Once being the frontrunner of the ‘Next Gen’ winning three Masters 1000 titles early on in his career, he was overshadowed in 2019 by the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem.

Although Zverev was able to pull his season back after the Laver Cup and did well to qualify for the year end ATP finals in London, he will be looking for more consistency and better results at the bigger tournaments in 2020, especially the majors.

With the ATP Cup and the Australian Open round the corner, Zverev will want to be a force to reckon with and avoid the disappointing losses of 2019. An opportunity to play the likes of Federer right before heading Down Under will definitely serve as useful warm-up and match practice for the German, and he will look to make the most of it.

Roger Federer v Alexander Zverev Predictions & Tips

Given the exhibition nature of this match, it will probably not have the flavor of some of the earlier clashes between both players, but both players will treat this as a good confidence booster ahead of another grueling season.

It is no surprise that the crowd will be heavily in favor of Federer and that will surely work to his advantage.

A fun match ahead, but at the start of the new season almost, a fresh Federer will be difficult to beat. Expect a three set contest in favor of the Swiss.
