Kiki Bertens v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

The pair have played each other six times so far, with both the players have won three each. Out of the three times they played on hard courts, Bertens has won twice. Similarly, Sakkari has won twice out of the three occasions they have met on clay courts.

Bertens Coming off a Tough Campaign In Brisbane

The 28-year-old Dutchwoman is coming off a testing campaign in Brisbane, where she faced three strong opponents. She prevailed over world number 22, Dayana Yastremska, and world number 26, Anett Kontaveit, in the first two rounds. Both the matches went to three sets. In the quarter-finals, she faced world number four Naomi Osaka and went down in a tight three-setter.

This would prove to be an ideal opportunity for her as she bids to improve on her second-round exit from the Australian Open from last year. Overall it was an impressive year for Bertens as she won over 50 matches and won two titles, at Madrid & St. Petersburg last season.

Despite having not fallen out of the top 10 in rankings for over a year now, her performances in the Grand Slams were below par last year. She never made it past the third round at any of the Slams, a record which she will surely want to improve on this season.

Sakkari on a Five-Match Losing Run

The 24-yeard-old from Greece has shown consistent progress on the tour each season. She reached her first-ever WTA final at San Jose and achieved a career-best ranking of 29 in 2018. She went one step further last year, where she won her maiden WTA title at Rabata and once again achieved a career-best ranking of 22.

Arguably her best run of the season came shortly after her first title, where she reached the semi-finals of the Italian Open in Rome.

But most of her success has come on the clay courts, and her record on the hardcourt still requires significant improvement. Her record on tour was 35-24 last year, but when performances on the clay courts are taken out, the record stands at a mediocre 20-19. After ending last season on the back of four consecutive losses, she started 2020 with a loss to Osaka in Brisbane.

Her mother, Angeliki Kanellopoulou, is a former WTA player. She was world number 43 at one point of time, reached a WTA final in Athens, and reached the third round of French Open. Sakkari has already gone past her mother with her best-ever ranking and maiden title. It will be interesting to see if she can go beyond the third round of a Grand Slam, which remains her best ever run so far.

Kiki Bertens v Maria Sakkari Predictions & Tips

Bertens starts this match as the favorite. She was impressive in Brisbane and looked in good form. Sakkari, on the other end, hasn’t won a match since her second-round victory at the US Open. Her lack of form, as well as record on the hard courts, makes it difficult for her to get anything from the match.

Tip: Bertens to win in straight sets: 1/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
