Ashleigh Barty v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

The pair have played each other five times before, with the Russian leading their head to head series by three matches to two, although two of those victories came before Barty took her sabbatical from tennis. They have not met though since 2018, where Pavlyuchenkova won their first match in Strasbourg, Barty getting her revenge at the Wuhan Tennis Open.

Barty Readying Herself for Melbourne

World number one Barty, winner of the French Open last year and the WTA Finals, will have her sights firmly set on Melbourne next week and her “home” Grand Slam, where she will be hoping to improve on her quarter-final appearance last year.

Like many Australian sportsmen and women she has responded to the Australian bushfires by offering financial support to the victims, donating all her prize money from the Brisbane International to disaster relief. Unfortunately, her contribution was not as much as anticipated as she was knocked out in the second round of the singles by the qualifier, Jennifer Brady of the United States.

She did get to the final of the doubles though with Kiki Bertens, but, although they had a match point, they went down in the end to the number one seeds Hseih Su-wei and Barbora Strycova.

Pavlyuchenkova Looking to Continue Last Year’s Revival

A former junior world number one, and winner of 12 WTA titles, Pavlyuchenkova experienced something of a return to form last year after 2018 saw her drop out of the world’s top 30 for the first time in six years. She reached the final of the Pan Pacific Open, only to lose to Naomi Osaka, and then again at the Kremlin Cup but, although she took the first set off Belinda Bencic, she eventually succumbed to the Swiss woman.

In her first match of the season, she was beaten last week by Karolina Pliskova, but not before taking the first set off the world number two, who went on to successfully defend her title.

However, she got her campaign in Adelaide off to a comfortable start with a straight sets win over Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in the first round.

Ashleigh Barty v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Predictions & Tips

Although Pavlyuchenkova has the superior head to head record, that is not a reliable guide to the relative form of the two players because her wins came either before, or just after, Barty’s break from the game. The Australian is a different player since then, and wanting to find form ahead of the Australian Open, will not want to be beaten in the second round of a tournament for a successive week.

Tip: Barty to win in straight sets: 4/7 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
