Karolina Pliskova v Laura Siegemund Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the quarter-final in Stuttgart in 2017, when Siegemund beat Pliskova in the quarter-final before going on to win the title.

Pliskova, Chasing Elusive Grand Slam title

World number two Pliskova reached the semi-finals in Melbourne last year before losing to Naomi Osaka, and she is aiming to go at least one stage further this time, as she chases her elusive first Grand Slam title. She has a good record in this tournament, have also been a quarter-finalist twice, and was also a beaten semi-finalist in the doubles in 2016.

Last year was her most successful year ever. She reached five Premier event finals and won four of them – in Brisbane, Rome, Eastbourne and Zhengzhou – proving her versatility by winning on different surfaces.

She has already enjoyed success in 2020 as well, successfully defending her title in Brisbane, where she beat Madison Keys in the final.

She was given a tough opening draw against Kristina Mladenovic of France, but coped with the challenge of the former world number 10, defeating her in straight sets.

Siegemund, an Experienced German Competitor

Although not a household name, Siegemund, the current world number 72, has been playing on the WTA tour for a number of years, and has enjoyed a fair degree of success, in particular in doubles, where she has won five titles, including the Premier event of the Kremlin Cup in 2018.

She has also reached three singles finals, winning two of them, the Swedish Open in 2016, and the Stuttgart Open a year later, where Pliskova was amongst the women she beat. However, all those finals, and most of those she reached and won on the junior ITF circuit were on clay.

She is less adept on other surfaces, as evidenced by the fact that her best performance in Melbourne was a third round appearance four years ago.

Despite this, she had an impressive first round win, beating the wildcard and 2017 semi-finalist CoCo Vanweghe of the USA in straight sets.

Karolina Pliskova v Laura Siegemund Predictions & Tips

Despite Siegemund winning their one previous meeting, that was on her favourite surface of clay. She is less comfortable on hard courts like Melbourne. And, since that match, Pliskova has developed into an all-court player. She should have too much power and guile for the German this time round.

Tip: Pliskova to win in straight sets: 4/9 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
