Belinda Bencic v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

This will be a first-ever meeting between these two players. They were due to play each other in third round of the 2019 US Open, but illness forced Kontaveit to pull out from the tournament.

Bencic Saw Off Junior Rival Ostapenko

Belinda Bencic earned a first tour-level win over big-hitting junior rival and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 7-5 7-5 to reach the Australian Open third round for the third time. The pair had been competing against each other since their U-14 days, but had only met once at pro level, with Ostapenko winning on that occasion.

Bencic though managed to level the head-to-head and she has continued her march in Melbourne where her best appearance remains a fourth round in 2016 when she was only 18.

The Swiss star is fresh from a career-best season in 2019 in which she won two titles and also achieved a landmark achievement in reaching the US Open semifinals for the first time.

Bencic’s performances throughout the last 12 months have put her in contention to challenge at the first major of the year, and right now her form is showing no signs of abating.

Kontaveit Fully Recovered From Illness

Anett Kontaveit was due to play Bencic in the third round of the US Open last September, but she withdrew from the tournament after suffering from a viral infection.

The illness turned out to be more serious than anticipated as the Estonian was forced to bring her 2019 season to a premature end. She needed surgery to remove an abscess which ultimately forced her to miss the Linz and Moscow tournaments last October.

Despite the misfortune, Kontaveit still had a few personal highlights last year. She achieved a career-high ranking of World No.12 in April, becoming the highest-ever ranked Estonian in tennis history. She also reached the semifinals of Miami and finished runner-up in Stuttgart.

Kontaveit is now fit and raring to go. She played in two lead-up events before the Australian Open, but lost early in both Brisbane and Adelaide.

Belinda Bencic v Anett Kontaveit Predictions & Tips

The real worry for Kontaveit is a lack of match fitness. She momentarily struggled to put away Sorribes Tormo in the previous round, and is coming up against a red-hot Bencic who is playing better tennis. But the wily Swiss has been limited to narrow wins in her two matches and I expect this one to follow suit.
