Prajnesh Gunneswaran v Yannick Maden Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before in the Furth Challenger event in Germany in 2016, Maden winning in straight sets on his favourite surface of clay.

Gunneswaran is India’s Number One

Gunneswaran is currently the top ranked Indian singles player, standing at 123 in the world, although he was ranked as high as 75 nearly a year ago.

Like his opponent, he has spent most of his career on the junior tours, but has won 2 Challenger Events, both in 2018 – in Anning, China, and in Bangalore. He has also got some scalps of top 30 players on his CV, having beaten both Benoit Paire of France, and Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia in Indian Wells last March.

Like his opponent he lost in the second round of the Challenger event in Canberra, and then was beaten in the third round of qualifying for the Australian Open. However, he entered the main draw as a lucky loser, but was beaten in straight sets by Tatsuma Ito of Japan.

Maden, a German Journeyman Pro

Maden has been a professional since 2013, but his tennis has been played predominantly on the junior circuits, and he has had little success on the senior tour. He did briefly break in the world’s top 100 in the autumn of last year, but has now slipped down to 123.

His last tournament success of any kind came in the ITF Futures Event in Reggio Emilio in Italy in 2017 on clay, his preferred surface. Since then he has been in seven Challenger finals and lost all of them, most recently in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, in October.

This year to date he has suffered three consecutive second round defeats – at the Challenger event in Canberra, in the second round of qualification for the Australian Open, and at the Challenger tournament in Burnie, Australia.

Prajnesh Gunneswaran v Yannick Maden Predictions & Tips

On paper, this is a very even contest, with the two men separated by just two places in the world rankings. However, Gunneswaran will start favourite. He is playing in India in front of his home fans, and Maden is happier on clay than on hard courts like those found in Pune.
