Corentin Moutet v Andrej Martin Head to Head

Martin won a clay-court quarterfinal in Quito two years ago, while Moutet won a qualifier on the hard court of Doha earlier this year. They also met at a Challenger event in Uzbekistan last year, which was won by Moutet.

Moutet Battles Past Local Favourite

Corentin Moutet, who beat Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro 6-4, 6-3 in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, caused an upset on Wednesday as he battled past local favourite and No. 2 seed Guido Pella in a tough three-setter.

The 20-year-old Frenchman who lost the first set tie-break, raced to a 4-0 lead in the second, before the World No. 22 came back into the contest winning five games in a row. With Pella serving for the match at 5-4, the writing seemed on the wall for Moutet, but the Frenchman refused to give up as he came roaring back into the contest, forcing the decider.

Taking control from that point on, Moutet won the contest 6-7(4-7), 7-5, 6-3 in just over three hours.

The left-hander, who reached the third round of the French Open last year after beating Pella in the second round, has got off to a great start in 2020, having finished runner-up at the Qatar Open last month. En route to the final, Moutet beat Alexei Popyrin, Tenny Sandgren, Milos Raonic, Fernando Verdasco and Stan Wawrinka, before finally coming up short against Andrey Rublev in the title clash.

Moutet next faces Slovakia’s Andrej Martin, whom he beat in the first qualifier in Doha before making that run to the final.

Martin Sees Off Qualifier Taberner

One of the prominent faces in the Challenger circuit, Andrej Martin needed just over two hours to beat Spanish qualifier Carlos Taberner 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) on Wednesday to secure a spot in the last eight.

The 30-year-old Slovak, who saved all four break points in the Round of 16 contest, had beaten Argentina’s Federico Coria 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in the first round.

A clay court specialist, Martin won three Challenger events and finished runner-up in two in 2019. He also reached the semifinal of Challenger Punta de Este in Uruguay last week, only to be beaten by eventual runner-up Marco Cecchinato of Italy.
