Naomi Osaka v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between Osaka and Tormo and the Japanese player has won both the previous matches. The last they played, however, on clay, Osaka was stretched to the third set at Madrid last year before she won the final set 6-0.

Osaka’s Fallen to Worst Ranking in a Long Time

A poor showing at the Australian Open earlier this year has left Osaka struggling to remain in the top 10 of the WTA Rankings, having fallen to her worst ranking since September 2018. Having jumped to seventh in the world following her title win at the US Open then, she finished that season at fifth, and then took over the top spot with a victory at the Australian Open.

Since then, however, things haven’t gone that well for the Japanese number one and her performances at Grand Slams in particular have left a lot to be desired. Starting off as the defending champion at the Australian Open earlier this year, she was sent packing in straight sets in the third round by Cori Gauff, having earlier made it as far as the semifinal at Brisbane.

This match might not matter as far as her individual rankings go, but Osaka will be desperate to get back to her fighting best. The only issue for her here then will be the surface, which the Spaniards have very smartly opted to go for clay. Could see a toughie here.

Tormo’s Made an Underwhelming Start

78th-ranked Tormo might not have been a match for Osaka in the previous two times she’s played but this one will be in front of the hoe crowd and on a surface she prefers. And she will welcome the clay following a ragged start to the season on hard court surfaces.

Following her first round exit at Shenzhen, Tormo went through the qualifiers at Hobart but lost in the opener before winning her first and only main draw match of season at the Australian Open. In the second round she lost to Anett Kontaveit before also crashing out of the first round match at the Burnie ITF tournament.

A change in surface might help – given her much better clay record – but she will still be up against a top opponent, albeit a struggling one.

Naomi Osaka v Sara Sorribes Tormo Predictions & Tips

This might not be a straightforward encounter and we might see another three-setter despite what the rankings or odds say (3/1 for a Tormo win). Osaka could still edge her opponent out though.
