Petra Martic v Xiyu Wang Head to Head
This will be a first-ever meeting between these two players.
Martic Looking To Kick-start Her 2020 season
2019 and Istanbul in particular will forever be etched into Petra Martic’s memory for as long as she plays the game. The Croat soared to new heights, and at the age of 29, gave a further illustration it is never too late to reach your peak.
Martic enjoyed a career-best season in 2019. She won her maiden title in Istanbul under tumultuous circumstances, then made the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time at the French Open. Her strong showing during the Asian swing enable her to put the icing on the cake as she cracked the top-20 for the first time with a series of breathtaking displays.
Martic made the fourth-round of the US Open and followed that up with a runner-up finish in Zhengzhou. In Wuhan she pushed World No.1 Ashleigh Barty to the limit in a tough three-set loss.
However, despite all the thrills of her excellent 2019 season, she is yet to replicate her performances during the start of 2020. She lost to the inconsistent Frenchwoman Alize Cornet in the second round in Auckland, and in Melbourne, she lost control of her contest against Julia Goerges, also in the second round in a three-set defeat.
Wang is Highly Touted As Next Generation Star
Xiyu Wang is player who is not shy of the occasional upset. She scored a memorable win as a 16-year-old on her WTA main draw debut at the Tianjin Open against Danka Kovinic.
Wang has been tipped by her close peers and the Chinese tennis community to be the heir to Li Na’s mantle as China’s next star.
Already 18 now, she won the US Open junior title in 2018 and has soared into the world’s top-200. The left-handed teenager holds multiple victories over top-100 players including Monica Puig and Rebecca Peterson.
Who knows maybe she could claim the biggest scalp of them all against the World No.15 Martic.
