World number five Daniil Medvedev is part of the ‘Next Gen’ of upcoming tennis players and along with Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, has been tipped as the ones most likely to win major tournaments in the near future.

2019 was a stellar year for Medvedev, who qualified for six finals in a row, won two ATP Masters 1000 titles (Cincinnati and Shanghai) and put up a stellar performance against Rafa Nadal in the US Open final.

Medvedev reached a career high ATP ranking of four in 2019, ending the year right behind the ‘Big Three’.

Although 2019 ended with a disappointing run at the ATP Tour finals where he lost all his singles matches, Medvedev started off the season strong this year. The inaugural ATP Cup saw him lead Russia to the final four where he came within a few points of defeating Novak Djokovic.

However, a stunning fourth round loss to Stan Wawrinka at the Australian Open, after being up two sets to one would have  set him back, and he will look for a title run here to get the year back to his expectations.

Although Medvedev will start as a strong favorite here in this opening round match, he will keep in mind that Pospisil is more match ready and on a bit of a run in the last week or so.

The Russian will look to start strong and play his baseline game, hoping that the Canadian’s legs will be less fresh after a busy last week in Montpellier.

While Pospisil may continue his form and cause trouble to the young Russian, Medvedev is expected to come out clinically, after his unexpected Melbourne loss.
