The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 28-year-old Pole, and her Chinese opponent, a decade younger than her.

Linette, Now Poland’s Number One

Now the Polish number one, Linette broke into the world top fifty for the first time at the end of 2019, but did not start this season in the best way, losing in the first round in Shenzen to another Chinese player Zhang Shuai. She then went to Hobart, where she beat the multi-Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova for the first time, before suffering defeat at the hands of the American Lauren Davis.

Linette was beaten in the first round of the Australian Open by the Dutch player Arantxa Rus in three sets, but had much more success playing for Poland in the Fed Cup last week, winning all three of her singles’ matches, and helping her country gain promotion from their group

She got her campaign in Thailand off to a winning start on Wednesday with a straight sets win over the Ukrainian Katerina Bondarenko.

Wang, Conqueror of Martic

As a junior, Wang won the singles at the US Open and the doubles at Wimbledon. She was also a beaten finalist in the doubles at Flushing Meadows.

The 18 year old world 134 has yet to win a senior WTA title though, despite making her debut on the senior tour in 2017 at Nanjing, but has won three ITF events, most recently in Osaka, Japan last April.

Beginning her season in Shenzen, where she was given direct entry into the main draw, she got to the second round before losing to Elise Mertens of Belgium in straight sets. Wang then won two qualifying rounds in Melbourne, but was beaten in the third match and failed to get into the main draw of the Australian Open for the first time.

However, she achieved the best result of what is still a fledgling career in the first round here in Thailand, beating Petra Martic of Croatia, the world number 15, in straight sets.
