Jordan Thompson v Andreas Seppi Head to Head

Seppi leads 2-0, having won in straight sets in the second round of the Australian Open in 2019 and in three sets in the Round of 16 at Delray Beach, also in 2019.

Thompson Battles Past Isner

A day after beating 6”11’ Ivo Karlovic in a tough two-setter, World No. 63 Jordan Thompson got another big scalp Thursday as he defeated 6″10′ John Isner in a gruelling two-and-a-half hour battle to advance into the quarterfinal of the New York Open.

With neither player ready to blink, the first two sets went into tie-breaks but it was in the third set when Thompson got the only break of the match early and then seized control to finally see off Isner 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.

The 25-year-old right-hander who returned well against the big-serving Karlovic in the first match was equally good against Isner, despite the American’s 22 aces in the match.

A season that started off slowly for Thompson, now seems to be gaining momentum as he reaches the last eight in New York with a realistic chance of advancing further in the tournament.

However, facing him in the quarterfinal is a player who has a perfect record against the Aussie and both those defeats will be very fresh in their minds.

Seppi Knocks Out Johnson

It has been a busy start to the year for Andreas Seppi. We are only into the second week of February but the 35-year-old Italian is playing his fifth tournament of the year. Not that he made any significant impact in any of the previous four events he featured in, but has definitely been impressive in New York.

The 2019 Sydney International finalist, who defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 1-6, 6-7 (6-8) in the first round, booked a place in the last eight on Wednesday after defeating local hope Steve Johnson 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in a tight 90-minute encounter.

A three-time champion at the Tour level, Seppi’s biggest achievement till date came at the Australian Open in 2015 when he upset Roger Federer in four sets in the third round. The 98th-ranked right-hander who struggled for form ever since that famous win five years ago saw a significant dip in his career graph before that mini-revival in Sydney in 2019. A deeper run in New York will certainly stand him in good stead.

Jordan Thompson v Andreas Seppi Predictions & Tips

While Thompson is the higher-ranked player and has bigger scalps in the tournament, the more experienced Seppi will fancy his chances having beaten the Aussie twice in the last 13 months. Difficult to predict this, but Seppi should win this in three.

Tip: Seppi to win in three sets: 7/2 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
