Martic’s Found Some Form in Dubai

World number fifteen Martic has only won a single WTA title, the Istanbul Cup last April, although she has been in three other finals. including that of the Premier event in Zhengzhou in September, where she was beaten by Karolina Pliskova.

She has had a decidedly mixed start to the season so far, losing to the world number 56 Alize Cornet in the second round in Adelaide and then, after beating Christina McHale of the USA, suffering another second round defeat in Melbourne, this time at the hands of the German Julia Goerges.

Martic then lost in the first round of Hua-Hin last week, beaten by the Chinese player Xiyu Wang in straight sets, but seems to have rediscovered some belated form in Dubai.

She has enjoyed three straight set victories so far – first over Su-wei Hseih of Taipei, then the Czech double specialist Barbora Strycova, and finally, in her quarter final on Thursday, against Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.

Rybakina, Player of the Year so Far?

Rybakina, who is now up to a career high 19 in the WTA rankings, is arguably the woman in the hottest form on the WTA tour right now. She has already reached three finals in 2020, in Shenzen, Hobart, and St. Petersburg, and she added the title in Australia to the one that she secured in Bucharest last July.

And although she lost to Kiki Bertens in the final in Russia last Sunday, that does not seem to have dented her confidence at all, as she is enjoying another fine tournament in Dubai.

First she came from a set down to beat the number five seed, and Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin on Tuesday, and then followed that up by defeating the Czech Katerina Siniakova on Wednesday in straight sets.

That gave her a quarter-final tie with Siniakova’s compatriot and number two seed Karolina Pliskova, but the outcome was the same – a straight sets win for Rybakina.

Petra Martic v Elena Rybakina Predictions & Tips

Despite Martic being the higher ranked and seeded player, Rybakina will start as the favourite to win this match. She is in a rich vein of form at the moment, and, having beaten both Kenin and Pliskova, will feel very confident of making her fourth final of the year already.
