Milos Raonic v Steve Johnson Head to Head

This will be their fifth meeting. Raonic leads 3-1 on head to head with Raonic having won in their first three matches, all of which came in 2014. Their previous meeting came in 2018, at this very tournament and Johnson had gotten past the Canadian in straight sets on his way to the semifinals.

Raonic Looking Relentless This Tournament

Roger Federer had said during the Australian Open he was happy to see Milos Raonic perform the way he did and his true place in the ATP rankings belonged to much better than the 30-odd he had found himself then. Raonic had made it to the last-eight there before losing to Novak Djokovic, a much-improved showing and things looked to be getting back on track.

Unfortunately for the Canadian, he suffered a shock second round defeat at the hands of Soon-woo Kwon at the New York Open which pushed his ranking further down to 37th. Which is why a solid showing at this Delray Beach Open was the need of the hour for Raonic as he looks to attempt that ascent back towards that lofty career-high of number three in the world.

And so far, he has managed to do that rather well.

He started off in the first round with a solid, 6-2, 6-2 demolition of Denis Istomin before breezing past Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in straight sets in the second round too. And now he faces a player ranked 76th in the world for a place in the semifinal.

Johnson’s Year’s Been Full of Challengers

Having hit a season low of 99th in the world last year, Johnson has climbed up 23 places since then and he has done that by playing a lot of Challenger tennis. This year itself, he started off at the Canberra Challenger where he made it to the quarterfinal and then went on to win the title in Bendigo.

Johnson’s appearance at a Challenger tournament this season came at Newport Beach where he made the semifinal, having played in and gotten ousted out of Australian Open in the first round. At the New York Open, then, he won his first main draw match in an ATP competition, and has gone one step further here.

He was a straight-set winner over Henri Laaksonen in the first round before defeating fellow American Jack Sock in the second in a tough, three-setter. Can he continue that run against a much more fancied player?
