Donna Vekic v Iga Swiatek Head to Head

This will be their second meeting, with the first having come as recently as the Australian Open last month. Swiatek had shocked Vekic in that encounter after the Croat had gone in as a heavy favourite to make it to the fourth round there.

Swiatek’s Lost Just One Match in 2020…

…but to be fair, it’s also to do with the fact she has played in just two tournaments. At the Australian Open, the Polish player with a career-best ranking of 48th in the world, won three matches in a row in straight sets before Anett Kontaveit sent her out in the fourth round. Even in that match, Swiatek had her chances, and showed her fighting capabilities.

She had won the first set there and in the final set, came back from 5-1 down to level it at 5-5. It was only some last-minute nerves which allowed Swiatek’s opponent to complete the victory there.

And she followed it up with three more in the Fed Cup, where she won them all but arguably against very low-ranked players.

Swiatek, who is all of 18 years of age, has already seen a huge jump in her rankings, having gone from 727th in 2018 to 174th in the world that year and pushing on to break into the top 50 this season. Another strong showing here should sow the seeds for a top 30 entry very soon.

Vekic’s Mediocre Start to the Season

Vekic had one of her best seasons in 2019 which helped her climb up the ranking ladder, up to 19th in the world. This year, however, things have gotten out of control, especially losing to mid-rung players. With a top-10 ranking up for grabs if she can go on a winning rampage, she would know there would be times she would be facing up to top-10 players too and losses might be inevitable.

It’s the four defeats she has suffered this season which might hurt a lot more.

At the Brisbane International, she went out in the first round to Yulia Putintseva, then lost to Dayana Yastremska in the Adelaide quarterfinal before that Swiatek loss at the Australian Open. And even turning out at the St.Petersburg Open two weeks ago, she was a 6-1, 7-5 loser in the second round against Ekaterina Alexandrova – a player ranked 25th in the world at the moment.

What Vekic needs is to get on some sort of a winning streak, a deep tournament run which brings the same, old confidence back and she can do here starting with avenging that loss in Melbourne.

Despite the difference in the rankings, recent form dictates the bookmaker odds and by the looks of it, they think there isn’t much to choose between them. Both are 5/6 according to bet365 and the better option is to probably go with the games played in this one and it could be an over 21.5 games in this one.
