Ashleigh Barty v Laura Siegemund Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the world number one, and a player ranked 67 places below her currently.

Barty, Getting Over Disappointment of Melbourne

The winner of the French Open and the WTA Finals in Singapore last October, Barty had her sights set on becoming the first Australian for more than 30 years to win her home Grand Slam.

And, despite losing in the first round in the warm-up event in Brisbane, she went on to win the next in Adelaide, and seemed in good form getting to Melbourne.

She was made to fight in her first round match with Lesia Tsurenko, but all appeared going to plan as she cruised past Polona Haercog and Elena Rybakina. Alison Riske took her to three sets, but then she sailed past Petra Kvitova to make the semi-final.

Unfortunately for Barty and the Melbourne crowd, Sofia Kenin had not read the script, and it was she who produced the upset and went on to claim the title.

Barty has not played since but, having had time to lick her wounds, is ready to start challenging for more titles again.

Siegemund, German Qualifier in Doha

Now 31, Siegemund has been somewhat of a late developer in tennis terms. She did not reach her first WTA final until Stuttgart in 2016, when she was beaten by Angelique Kerber, and, a few months later, she won her first event. the Swedish Open. The following year she returned to Stuttgart and won the tournament, and. the following year at Flushing Meadows, she won the Mixed Doubles’ event with her partner Mate Pavic of Croatia.

Since then her biggest success has been on the doubles court – last September, she won the Guangzhou Open with Peng Shuai.

Her form in 2020 has been mixed so far. She lost in the second round of Adelaide, beaten by Serena Williams, and again in Melbourne, where Karolina Pliskova defeated her. However, she helped Germany beat Brazil and reach the Fed Cup finals, and came through two rounds of qualifying to make the main draw here.

She then beat Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan in straight sets on Sunday in the first round.
