Jelena Ostapenko v Barbora Strycova Head to Head

Osapenko and Strycova have played each other twice before this and it’s 1-1 on head to head. Their first match came at the lower tier of tennis and Strycova had won that match on clay while Ostapenko had her revenge on the hard court of Wuhan in 2017.

Ostapenko Needs a Solid Run

Now coached by Marion Bartoli, Ostapenka has found some sort of confidence and form to return back close to her best – although her best also included her winning the French Open title. She did end the previous season on that positive note but the death of her father before the start of this one could have pushed her back a tad.

Ostapenko didn’t play in any pre-season competitions, opted out of any of the tournaments before the Australian Open as well and while she defeated Ludmilla Samsonova in her opener at the first major, that was as far as she got.

Her finest moment of the season came at the Fed Cup though. After pushing Serena Williams to two tie-breakers in her first match, she was drawn to take on the Australian Open winner, Sofia Kenin in the next. With Latvia having fallen to 0-2 against the might of USA, it all seemed to be formality but Ostapenko held her nerve and defeated the American in three.

Since then she has lost in the opener at the St. Petersburg Open but came through against Jil Teichmann in the first round here in Doha to set up this meeting.

Strycova’s Season No Better

If Ostapenko enters this match with a win-loss ratio of 3-3, it seems to be even worse for Strycova, who has lost four of her seven matches so far. Two of those came in the first rounds; but making things worse for her is those losses came against Bernarda Pera and Sorana Cirstea, two players not very highly-ranked.

Strycova did make it to the second round at Brisbane and Dubai but lost to Alison Rise and Petra Martic respectively, which is why she would have felt a familiar feeling when she fell a set down to Petra Martic in her opener here.

However, in a rare show of fight this season, Strycova came back from that loss of first set to crush her opponent’s dreams, winning 6-1, 6-2. Can she make it a rare two wins in a row now?

Jelena Ostapenko v Barbora Strycova Predictions & Tips

Ostapenko has the game to trouble Strycova despite being ranked seven places behind her. With Ostapenko’s confidence at bit of a high from that win over Kenin, she starts off a favourite here and should progress to the third round.
