Karolina Pliskova v Bernarda Pera Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 27-year-old Czech woman, and the Croatian-born American, two years her junior.

Pliskova, a Winner in Brisbane But Hunting for Better Results

Pliskova began the year ranked second in the world after reaching six Premier finals in 2019, winning four of them – in Brisbane, Rome, Eastbourne, and Zhengzhou, And she underlined her credentials by winning the first tournament of this year, in Brisbane, where she beat Madison Keys in the final.

She had hopes then of finally ending her hunt for a Grand Slam title in Melbourne, with her previous best showing being her appearance in the US final of 2016, when she was beaten by Angelique Kerber in three sets.

However, it was not to be and the wait goes on, after she was beaten in the third round by the Russian Anastasia Pavyluchenkova in straight sets.

Last week in Dubai she got to the quarter-finals, but suffered another straight sets defeat to Elena Rybakina, And, because Simona Halep won the event, she has overtaken her in the world rankings as well.

Pera Makes it Through the Qualifiers

Pera spends the vast majority of her time on the junior ITF circuit, where she has won nine singles and eight doubles titles, the most recent of which came in Tmava in Slovakia last May.

Despite making her WTA tour debut at the US Open in 2014, she has only once beaten an opponent ranked in the top ten in the world at the time – Johanna Konta of Great Britain, at the Australian Open.

She began her year in Brisbane, but failed to qualify for the tournament there. However, she did qualify for the subsequent event in Adelaide, and went on to reach the second round before losing to Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.

She lost in the first round of the Australian Open, beaten by Elena Rybakina in straight sets, but here, in Doha, her first event since Melbourne, she made the main draw, when the Ukrainian Daria Lopatetska was forced to retire from their match after just one game, and then by beating Camila Giorgi of Italy.

On Monday, she beat Caroline Garcia of France, ranked 14 places above her in the world, in straight sets in the first round.
