The pair have never faced each other on the tour. This will be the first-ever meeting between the 18-year-old Russian and the 17-year-old Canadian.
Potapova Improving With Each Tournament This Year
Potapova’s season has been getting better with each passing tournament. She could not reach the main draws at Brisbane and Adelaide at the start of the year. But she did manage to reach the main draw at the Australian Open where she lost to Serena Williams. Following that she managed to win her first main draw match of the season at Saint Petersburg and went on to reach the quarter-finals.
She has repeated her performance this week at Acapulco as well by reaching the quarter-final stages once again. It will be interesting to see if she can continue to improve her previous performances by going one stage further this week.
The 18-year-old was as high as 64 in the world rankings last year. But she had a poor end to the season. She crashed out in the opening two rounds at the last seven events of the year and that resulted in her ranking dropping outside the top 100. She will be once again keen to recapture her best ranking and achieve more success on the tour this season.
Teenager Fernandez Having an Amazing Run
Prior this week no one knew much about the 17-year-old Canadian. Before this season, she had only played six matches at WTA main draws ever, four of which were at Toronto, Quebec and Montreal. Her home tournaments where she got to the main draw via wildcards. At the start of this season, she reached the main draw at the Australian Open but lost in the straight sets. Even this week, she only reached the main draw as a lucky loser.
But she has taken everyone by surprise by reaching the last eight and beating four players higher than her in rankings. More impressively, she has won all four matches in straight sets. Regardless of what happens in the next match, she is set to pick up at least 60 rankings points and will achieve her new career-best ranking at the start of next week.
Anastasia Potapova v Leylah Annie Fernandez Predictions & Tips
This is a match is likely to be a close contest. Potapova has won five out of her last six matches whereas Fernandez is on a five-match winning run. Both the players were not expected to be at this stage of the tournament and one of them will be reaching the semifinals against the odds. This one may go all the way to three sets.
