Heather Watson v Xiyu Wang Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the world ranked 69 British player. and her Chinese opponent, currently 127 in the WTA standings.

Watson Eyeing First Final of 2020

Watson is now the only seed left in the tournament and, at the age of 27, must feel like a veteran compared to the other remaining competitors – two teenagers and a 22 year old Mexican wildcard.

The British number two has a good record in Acapulco – she won the last of her three WTA titles here in 2016, and must now have a very good chance of repeating that victory.

This is her second semi-final of the year, having reached the same stage in Hobart in January, but it has not all been plain sailing for the woman from Guernsey. She had to come from a set down to beat the former top ten player Coco Vanweghe in the first round, and, although her victory over Katerina Bondarenko of the Ukraine was more comfortable, Christina McHale made her work hard in their quarter final on Thursday.

Having dropped the first set, the American broke back strongly to level in the second, before Watson regrouped, and closed out the third for the loss of just a single game.

Wang, Chinese Qualifier Prospering in Mexico

18-year-old Wang had a successful junior career, winning the US Open singles, and the doubles at Wimbledon, and finishing runners-up in the doubles at Flushing Meadows.

She is just starting on her senior career, and has yet to win a senior event, although she has won three ITF titles, the most recent of which came in Osaka, Japan, last April.

The world number 127, was a quarter-finalist in Hua Hun, beating Petra Martic of Croatia in the process for the best win of her career to date, before losing to the eventual winner Magda Linette of Poland.

However, she had to come through two rounds of qualifying just to make the main draw here, but, having done so, has taken full advantage of the opportunity she has earned herself.

First she beat compatriot and the number two seed Wang Yafan in straight sets, and then she overcame the stubborn challenge of the experienced Italian Sara Errani in a three set contest.

That earned her a quarter final with another Chinese woman, Lin Zhu, the number six seed, and again she won in straight sets to make her maiden WTA title.

Heather Watson v Xiyu Wang Predictions & Tips

Whilst this has been a tournament of big surprises, where favourites and seeds have all fallen by the wayside, Watson should have the greater experience and know-how to beat her teenage opponent, although it might take her three sets to do so.

Tip: Watson to win in three sets: 4/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
