Former world number one Kim Clijsters has been awarded a wild-card to participate in the Indian Wells Open this year. She will also play at the Monterrey Open in the lead-up to that competition in California.

The Belgian, who had recently played at the WTA Dubai Tennis Championships and lost her first round match to Garbine Muguruza, will now be a part of the 96-woman strong Indian Wells Open draw with the tournament starting off from March 12.

She will feature at the Indian Wells Open, also called the BNP Paribas Open, for the first time since 2011.

Clijsters looked out of sorts in the first set of her comeback match against the former Grand Slam winner Muguruza and then was down a couple of breaks in the second set as well. She fought back to bring things back to parity at five games apiece before the Spaniard broke away and completed the win.

Later she acknowledged she might have lost the match but was glad to have been back on court and competing.

The Belgian tweeted:

“I may have lost the match but for me this was a win. Being back on Court, that’s the feeling and energy I’ve missed and loved finding it again. Now looking forward to working together with my team to continue to grow and find my rhythm – step by step!”

Clijsters will next play at the Monterrey Open which is in its 12th edition. Muguruza is the two-time champion at this competition but has opted not to participate in it this season.

The Belgian will be joined by the likes of Elina Svitolina, Johanna Konta, Yulia Putintseva and Sloane Stephens in the Monterrey Open draw. The 2020 Monterrey Open begins from Monday, March 2.
