Kristina Mladenovic v Anna-Lena Friedsam Head to Head

Mladenovic leads 1-0 in the series, having won the pair’s only meeting in a second round match at Eastbourne in 2016.

Mladenovic Survived A Scare Against Paquet

Kristina Mladenovic is a former top-10 player, but she hasn’t looked remotely close to finding the form that saw her establish herself as one of the most endearing players on the women’s tour a little over four seasons ago.

Mladenovic was entrenched inside the world’s top-10 as recently as January 2018 after a superb first half of the 2017 season that saw her win her first WTA tour title in St. Petersburg along with quarterfinal run at the French Open. Her form has gone off the boil ever since, drifting to as low as No.68 in the world in March last year.

The silky Frenchwoman has crept back inside the world’s top-50 after some highly respectable results during the latter stages of the 2019 season, reaching the semifinals in Zhengzhou and Moscow. She also recorded a handful of top-10 wins including scalps against the likes Belinda Bencic and Kiki Bertens.

Mladenovic is the second seed this week in Lyon and she won her opening match against wildcard Chloe Paquet despite trailing in the third set. She will certainly need an improved performance in her next outing, after serving a whopping 14 double faults against her countrywoman and losing serve six times throughout the contest.

Injury-plagued Friedsam Is Healthy Again

Anna-Lenna Friedsam’s comeback to professional tennis seems to be gaining steam. The 26-year-old German’s injury struggles have been well documented in the past, and it is always a nice sight to see her fit and raring to go yet again.

Friedsam, who has been ranked as high as No.45 in August 2016, has been operated on her shoulder multiple times in the past with the most recent surgery happening less than a year ago. She also took an extended break to heal from those injuries at fluctuating periods.

She did play a heavy schedule on her return last May, winning an ITF title in Roehampton and conjured up one of the best wins of her career in Linz when she upset Belinda Bencic to record her maiden top-10 win.

Can she make a deep run in Lyon this week?

Kristina Mladenovic v Anna-Lena Friedsam Predictions & Tips

Mladenovic has an incredible record against fellow French players throughout her career, winning eight of her past nine matches, but she struggled mightily against Paquet in her first match.

Friedsam has looked sharp in the last few months, having won an ITF title last September and beat Bencic in Linz. She also pushed WTA’s newest star Elena Rybakina to three sets in that event, which further illustrates her injury woes are behind her. Expect the German World No.136 to send error-prone Mladenovic packing.
