Svitolina Finally Wins a Match…

Having last won a couple of rounds at the Hua Hin Open, Elina Svitolina was on a three-match losing streak coming into this tournament. A quarterfinal exit at the Hua Hin Open was followed by first match losses at Dubai and Doha to Jennifer Brady and Amanda Anismova, leaving her in bit of a strife.

Making things worse for Svitolina is she hasn’t had the best of starts even before Hua Hin. An opening round exit at her first tournament of the season in Brisbane was followed by bit of a resurrection at the Australian Open where she reached third round. However, a three-set defeat to Garbine Muguruza was followed by the current poor streak.

Svitolina did register a couple of Fed Cup victories but then lost to Anett Kontaveit, an indicator of her form against some of the top-50 players not being at her best. Here she is facing a 142nd-ranked player.

Govortsova, a Strong Lower-Circuit Player These Days

Once a 35th-ranked player in the world, the 31-year-old Govortsova has been reduced to playing tournaments at the lower circuit. She He results at the lower level are quite good, having won a title last year and added another this year as well.

However, it’s the step up that’s been difficult for Govortsova. For instance, in 2019, she lost in the qualifying rounds at the Australian and US Open, and lost in the first round in Tashkent and Houston WTA. Govortsova also went down in the WTA Moscow qualifiers.

Which means her first round win over Caroline Dolehide is her first in a long time, and while she was helped by the fact her opponent is herself ranked 131st in the world, the Belarusian will take great heart from that victory. That, however, might not be enough to go up against a world number seven.

Elina Svitolina v Olga Govortsova Predictions & Tips

This shouldn’t trouble Svitolina too much despite her form issues. A straight-set win looks par for the course in this one.
