Svitolina Showing Signs of Old

The Ukrainian has had a wretched start to this season, beginning with a shock thrashing of Danielle Collins in the first match of the year. It was at Brisbane and Svitolina, ranked fourth in the world, fell to a 6-1, 6-1 defeat. It spoke a lot about Svitolina’s rhythm since she was up against a player who was at 9/2 at the start of the match; and the loss came that easily.

She did show some spark in her first two rounds at the Australian Open but fell to Garbine Muguruza in the third, and had a 2-1 win-loss record in the Fed Cup after that. Not too bad one might say, but then came a quarterfinal defeat at the Hua Hin Open to Nao Hibino and two back to back losses in the opening rounds of Middle-East tournaments.

Which is why on the one hand, two straight-set wins in the first two rounds here in Monterrey should work well, the real test comes now that she is aiming to win a third in a row – having not done that all season.

Fernandez’s Just 17 and Showing Good Signs

She was 437th in the world at the start of 2019 and today, Canada’s Fernandez is threatening to break into the top 100. Starting the competition 126th, she is nearly 10 places up already and one more such result in the near future could help her get to direct qualification for Grand Slam competitions.

And it’s a lot to do with her Acapulco showing. Starting out as a qualifier, she defeated Varvara Lepchenko to make the main draw for starters. And then wins over Nina Stojanovic, Nao Hibino – the same player who had defeated Svitolina in Hua Hin – and Anastasia Potapova to make the final there.

Fernandez fought hard to take Heather Watson to a third set but lost the final, not before, however, she had done enough to raise interest in her teenager self.
