Indian Wells Open 2020: Halep, Kerber Injuries Forces Pull-Out

Simona Halep v Jasmine Paolini Live Streaming Predictions Linz Open

Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber have both withdrawn from the Indian Wells Open because of injuries of different nature.

Halep, who has won this title in Indian Wells, while Kerber, who was the runner-up last season, will not be seen at the tournament which begins next week. The Romanian world number two is currently battling a foot injury, while Kerber said she had a left leg issue.

In a statement, Halep said:

“I’m incredibly disappointed to have to withdraw from the 2020 BNP Paribas Open. Unfortunately the foot injury that I picked up before Dubai is still causing me trouble and I will be unable to recover in time to travel to Indian Wells.”

Halep had won her first Premier Mandatory title in Indian Wells in 2015, defeating Jelena Jankovic in the final. She last played in the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she defeated Elena Rybakina in the final to win the title. Halep was also the semifinalist at the Australian Open where she went down to Garbine Muguruza in two tight sets.

Kerber, who has slipped to 21st in the world, last played at the Australian Open where she made the fourth round before going down to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three gruelling sets. However, a foot injury, which in her words has been “testing her patience” has kept her away from the sport since then.

She said:

“I was hoping to be ready in time for the upcoming tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, but my medical team advised me to give it a little bit more rest. Thanks for your support! I can’t wait to be back on court soon.”

The German’s last singles title came at the 2018 Wimbledon following which the former world number one has struggled to regain that form.
