15-year-old American Robin Montgomery lifted her first ever ITF title after beating Xiaodi You in the final of the Las Vegas $25k competition on Sunday.

Montgomery, who started playing last year and featured in three tournaments in 2019, was featuring in her first competition of the season. She had played at ITF Carson and Williamsburg last season before getting a wild-card to participate at the Washington Open qualifying round where she lost in the first round.

The youngster, who was ranked 803rd in the world before the start of this competition, defeated the 174th-ranked You 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to lift her maiden title.

A quarterfinalist at the Australian Open junior girls singles competition, Montgomery had earlier lifted the Orange Bowl title. The Orange Bowl is one of the oldest competitions in juniors tennis for both men and women and she had defeated Jana Kolodynska 7-6(4), 6-3 to win the title.

Earlier, Montgomery won all the seven times she took to court at the Junior Fed Cup, in turn helping USA to lift the Junior Fed Cup title in 2019 September.

Speaking to the ITFTennis.com website, she had spoken about the confidence she garnered from the aforementioned two title wins.

She added:

“It helped me realise that I do belong here and that I can compete against the other girls playing big tournaments. It also made me realise that I can be one of the top players.”

With Cori Gauff already having taken the senior tour by storm, it remains to be seen if Montgomery becomes the next American teenage tennis player to work towards being the name to watch out for in the years to come.
