The WTA has announced the cancellation of all women’s tennis tournaments till May 2 because of the coronavirus spread.
This means the Stuttgart Open, Istanbul Open and Prague Open have all been added to the list of tournaments cancelled this year already because of the virus threat according to a WTA statement.
They also added:
“We regret this is the case for all of our loyal fans, players, sponsors and all those who support women’s professional tennis. At this point in time, the WTA Tour is now suspended until May 2.”
According to the WTA management, a call will soon be made around the rest of the month whether the remaining clay court tournaments in Europe can kick on as scheduled. The Strasbourg Open, which was scheduled for a May 16 start, announced they will be looking into the matter in a fortnight.

With the ATP having also cancelled tournaments till April 20, all eyes are now on the two big Grand Slams coming up, French Open and Wimbledon, both of which run the risk of getting suspended this year as well. The French government is already enforcing very strict rules surrounding the issue and the French President Emmanuel Macron has called the situation a “health war”.
French borders have been shut and unless the situation improves urgently, the possibility of no French Open getting played is real.
Wimbledon authorities have already said they would prefer not hosting the tournament as opposed to doing that to empty stands.
