Tennis News Today: Laver Cup 2020 Cancelled, Moved to Next Year

The 2020 edition of Laver Cup has been postponed to next year. It will still be played in Boston.

In a statement released by the Laver Cup authorities, the tournament, which was to be held in September 2020 at the TD Gardens in Boston will now be played between September 24 and 26, 2021 at the same venue.

They explained the reason for what is an effective cancellation of the 2020 edition of Laver Cup to be the “changes to the international tennis calendar which created a scheduling conflict with other major international tennis events”.

Because of the outbreak of the coronavirus, the ATP and WTA tennis calendar has already been disrupted and tournaments till middle of July have been cancelled. The year’s third Grand Slam, Wimbledon, was earlier called off for this year too.

Interestingly, early in this string of disruptions, the French Open authorities postponed the tournament to September 20, which was to clash with the originally-scheduled Laver Cup.

The Laver Cup organisers had released a statement then stating they wouldn’t be tweaking their own schedule to account for the French Open date change but given how things have gone with respect to the pandemic’s effect on life in general including sports, a postponement looked to be the only option.

Roger Federer, who is one of the stakeholders at the Laver Cup admitted they had no option but to postpone the event by a year despite the obvious disappointment for all those involved.

Tony Godsick, the Laver Cup Chairman and CEO of TEAM8 (Federer’s management company) revealed the need to make the decision early enough was to ensure all of those involved had clarity about what was happening.

“We wanted to call it now to provide certainty for our fans as well as our players, sponsors, broadcasters, partners, staff, volunteers and of course the great city of Boston.”

“We thank them all for their unwavering dedication, hard work, support and understanding and we can’t wait to bring happier times to Boston in 2021.”

Fans who had already bought the Laver Cup tickets can either opt to take a refund for them or can use the same tickets for the 2021 edition. More information on this will be revealed individually to those who had bought tickets by the organisers.
