‘One-Hip Wonder’ Murray to Play Third Match in a Row

Called a one-hip wonder by his brother Jamie, Andy Murray will be playing in his third successive match in as many days after having not played a single match this year before the start of the Battle of the Brits.

For someone who has been battling fitness issues around his hip, it could be a toughie to come into this tournament. He would have been at least a bit rusty and while that didn’t show in his opening win against Liam Broady, things came to head in his second match.

After dismissing Broady 6-2, 6-2, Murray was left to play a far tougher opponent in the form of Kyle Edmund, a 44th-ranked player in the world right now and he went down fighting in it. The good news for Murray was his competitive juices were flowing again and the string of expressed frustrations echoed through the empty courts.

The bad news was he went down in three sets, two of which went into a tie-breaker. What that means is he now needs to win this encounter to make it to the semifinal.

Ward 1-1 after Broady Win

Much like Murray, Ward also has won and lost one match this tournament and a victory here against the three-time Grand Slam winner will take him to the semifinal. However, his showing against Edmund left a lot to desire and he will have to up the ante if he has to carve out a win here.

Edmund spent very little time on court to scythe past Ward 6-1, 6-4 and while the latter registered an easy win against Broady, his overall record might leave him with a mountain to climb against Murray.

Interestingly, Ward last won a lower-level tournament in 2015, having had a string of poor seasons since then. Earlier this year, he made it to the final of the Rennes Challenger but followed it up with a three-match losing streak. He then lost in the second round at successive Challenger tournaments, before the crushing loss to Edmund.

Andy Murray v James Ward Predictions & Tips

Murray is a huge favourite to win this with odds of 1/12 for his victory with bet365. However, it must be quickly remembered Murray will be playing his third match in a row and if Ward can push him a tad, the result might not be as straightforward as that. A games handicap might not be a bad call here.
