Anett Kontaveit v Elisabetta Cocciaretto Head to Head

The world number 22 Kontaveit has never played Cocciaretto, ranked 156th, before this. Interesting first match given the shock form the latter has already shown in the competition.

Kontaveit Stretched but Comes Through

The Estonian dropped the opening set of her second round match against Laura Siegemund but came through in three sets and two hours and 20 minutes to make it to the last eight.

While Siegemund took the early break, Kontaveit retaliated to make it 2-2 before the German broke her twice more to wrap up the set. Needing to live up to her favourites billing, Kontaveit came out firing all cylinders to race to a 3-0 lead in the second and wrapped up the equaliser 6-2.

There was no looking back for Kontaveit in the third set and even as Siegemund’s aggression began to fade away, the Estonian broke her twice more to go 5-2 up. In the final game of the match she needed five match-points before booking her place in the last eight.

Earlier, Kontaveit, who had made the Australian Open quarterfinal, also defeated Patricia Maria Tig in the first round in straight sets.

Cocciaretto Strikes Twice

The Italian was the second favourite going into her first round match against Polona Hercog but that win might not have surprised too many fans given her opponent’s lack of form. Where she would have shocked a few more was with her second round win over Donna Vekic.

Vekic was the sixth seed in the tournament and ranked 24th in the world while Cocciaretto had only recently played in her maiden Grand Slam main draw match. To then banish Vekic the way she did, 6-2, 6-4, was remarkable.

The match lasted a mere hour and 35 minutes and doubled her number of wins in WTA main draw matches – yep that victory over Hercog was her first ever!

Interestingly, she is also the only woman, as of now, to remain a part of both draws, singles and doubles. Good things away and it remains to be seen if she can take another step forward here.

Anett Kontaveit v Elisabetta Cocciaretto Prediction & Tip

Kontaveit will start off as a clear favourite but Cocciaretto isn’t one to be underestimated on clay. The only worry for her would be the lack of experience of playing these many matches in a week at this level of a competition. Kontaveit should wrap this up in straight sets for us despite Cocciaretto’s surprising but excellent form.

Tip: Kontaveit to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
