Petra Martic v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

This will be the second match between Martic and Kontaveit having coincidentally played each other as recently as February of this year, just before the tour was called off. Martic had won that Dubai Open quarterfinal in straight sets after being stretched in the first set of that match.

Martic Battles on into the Semifinal

It was a two-set win for Martic in the quarterfinals against Aliaksandra Sasnovich but one in which things could have gone either way. Due credit to the favourite, top seed to then hold her nerve and carve out a 7-6, 7-6 win against the spirited Sasnovich.

In a match which saw both players hit more winners than unforced errors, Martic was down a break in the opening set before making a comeback to take it in the tie-breaker. The second set saw the script reversed a little as Martic was unable to serve out the match on two separate occasions before clinching it in a second tie-breaker.

Martic, who had crushed Alison van Uytvanck in her first round match then needed to comeback from a set down to overcome Luidmila Samsonova in the second round. With a fighting, high-quality straight-set win also added to this list of victories in this tournament, Martic looks to have experienced the whole bouquet and should hold that edge in this match.

Kontaveit Stretched to Three Again

For the second match in a row, Kontaveit was stretched to three sets and she came through to make it to the semifinals. Having beaten Patricia Maria Tig 6-3, 6-3 in the first round, Kontaveit then needed to come back from a set down to get past Laura Siegmund in the second round.

Faced up against the little-known but sparkling youngster Italian wildcard Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her quarterfinal, Kontaveit lost her momentum in the second set to allow her opponent to level things up one set all.

This included a sudden loss of serving confidence for Kontaveit, who was broken twice towards the end of the set.

With crowds allowed inside the stadium for this tournament, there was enough support for Cocciaretto but Kontaveit smashed 57 winners in her three-set victory, which lasted little less than two hours in the end.
