This will be the very first time these two Americans will be going head to head in a competitive match at the highest level.

Williams Begins US Open Tune-Up

While exhibition tennis has been on for a while now and the Palermo Open became the first tournament last week to kick-start proceedings it will be this match tennis fans will have their eyes on (other than the Halep-Hercog encounter in Prague). And that’s because arguably the greatest women’s tennis player, Serena Williams returns to court for the first time since her Fed Cup appearances in early February.

Williams was missing from action all these months, not even featuring in any of the exhibition competitions, opting to shelter herself from the pandemic virus because of the health issues she has faced in the past. Serena admitted she didn’t have full lung capacity so wasn’t sure of the effects of the virus on her.

The former world number one admitted she had got herself a private court made, which she used to practice all these weeks in the lead-up to this competition in Kentucky. And while the pandemic worries still remain, Williams will be there playing at this tournament before featuring at Flushing Meadows later this month.

Earlier this year, Williams had begun the season with a title win at the Auckland Open in the lead-up to the Australian Open but was sent packing in the third round of the first major of the year. She ended her pre-pandemic season with a 1-1 record at the Fed Cup where she defeated Jelena Ostapenko but lost to Anastasij Sevastova.

Pera Coming off a Solid World TeamTennis Show

Ranked 60th in the world, Pera was a part of the World TeamTennis competition and she won four of the six matches she played. These included victories over Christina McHale, Jessica Pegula, Jennifer Brady and Monica Puig.

Earlier in the season, Pera failed to qualify for the Brisbane International, made it through to the main draw in Adelaide and entered the second round there before suffering a straight-set defeat to Elena Rybakina in the first round of the Australian Open.

Pera also won a main draw match in Doha after qualifying for it with a couple of victories but suffered a surprise third round defeat in the Indian Wells Challenger competition in March. That, unfortunately, was the last competition played at that level before the coronavirus issue.

Pera’s showing has been way better on clay than hard courts which makes this match-up against Serena even tougher.

Serena Williams v Bernarda Pera Prediction & Tip

Serena starts off 2/9 to win this encounter and while there will be the obvious rustiness we expect her to run through this. A straight-set victory beckons for the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

Tip: Serena to win in straight sets: 8/13 (bet365)
