Sloane Stephens v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between Stephens and Fernandez, with their first match having come in Monterrey earlier this year. 17-year-old Fernandez had registered a three-set win over the 37th-ranked Stephens.

Stephens Struggles Continue in 2020

A US Open winner, a former world number and yet, Stephens has slipped down the WTA rankings charts rather dramatically in recent times. And a few of the signs of that have been on display this season too.

Stephens took five tournaments to record her first WTA match win this year; yes, that’s right, she was 0-4 on win-loss going into the Monterrey Open before she finally won her first match of the year. The first four defeats included losses in Brisbane, Adelaide, Australian Open and Acapulco, none of which came against top-20 players either.

And after winning that first round match, Stephens lost the second to Leylah, her opponent here.

During the pandemic break, Stephens participated in the Credit One Bank International, where she won and lost one, and was a part of the World TeamTennis competition. There were a few decent performances in that tournament but can she up the ante as she looks to build towards the US Open.

Leylah Announces Herself with Monterrey Final

Fernandez has risen up the ranks quite quickly, having won a lower-tiered competition in 2019 and then making it to the final at the Acapulco Open earlier this season. There she lost to Heather Watson but it was her best showing in her short career till date.

What made that final appearance special was she had to qualify for the event, and went on to win six matches in straight sets before her three-set loss in the title-decider. At Monterrey, where she beat Stephens, she stretched Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals before losing that encounter.

Having participated in three tournaments during the break, Leylah won five and lost four before registering a couple of qualifying wins in the Lexington Open to make the main draw.

Sloane Stephens v Leylah Fernandez Prediction & Tip

Interesting to note that despite Fernandez being ranked 80+ places behind Stephens she is only 5/4 to win this. We think this could be a fighting match though, which goes into the third set.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 13/8 (bet365)
