Ons Jabeur v Olga Govortsova Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Jabeur and Govortsova at this level but they have played once before competitively on the ITF circuit. Govortsova had won that semifinal match in three sets.

Jabeur Eases into Round Two

Jabeur came back on to the tour like she had never left it! Having made her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal, Jabeur had played just one match during the pandemic break and it came in the UTS 2 competition, the first tournament organised by them for women. Featuring in the semifinal, she lost that one-off encounter but it looked to have helped her shrug off any rustiness.

Because coming into this opening round match here in Kentucky, Jabeur might have been the favourite but could have easily been stretched by the local Caty McNally. Instead, Jabeur came through in two easy sets, winning 6-2, 6-4 to enter round two.

Life looks to have turned around completely for Jabeur in the last 18 or so months. She was ranked 180th in the world in June 2018, but consistency at lower-tiered and WTA International tournaments and a run to the quarterfinals at both, the Australian Open and the Qatar Open have helped her climb to her career-best 39th in the world.

She is up against a player who, at 31, and with a ranking of 135th in the world, looks past her prime but with a decent run of form under her belt.

Govortsova Bests Fellow Qualifier

Ranked outside the top 100, Govortsova couldn’t have hoped for a better first round opponent. It wasn’t just the fact she was facing a qualifier in the form of Bethanie Mattek-Sands, but also the fact she rarely plays singles these days.

In fact Mattek-Sands’ only singles appearance in a WTA tournament came in Dubai earlier this year where she won a couple of qualifiers but lost the third to fail to make it to the main draw. Govortsova was a favourite in this encounter, and while stretched to a tie-breaker in the first set, she came through easily in the end, winning 7-6, 6-1.

The one other advantage Govortsova has is she has been playing on hard court surfaces during the pandemic break too, having featured at the World TeamTennis in July. She played nine matches there and add that to the three she has already featured in this tournament, it should give her some confidence going into this.

Ons Jabeur v Olga Govortsova Prediction & Tip

Jabeur should not have too many difficulties getting past Govortsova in this one with bet365 offering 1/2 for her win. A straight-set win looks most likely too.

Tip: Jabeur to win in straight sets: 6/5 (bet365)
