Marcos Giron v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

The pair have only met once so far on the tour. That meeting was on the 2017 Futures tour where McDonald prevailed in three sets.

Giron Closing in on the Top 100 for the First Time

The 27-year-old American has been tantalisingly close to breaking into the top 100 for a while now. He achieved his career-best ranking of 102 in the first week of November last year.

Since then his ranking hasn’t fallen below 115 but he still hasn’t got into the top 100.

Giron has a really solid two-handed backhand and his record on the hard courts is very good. He is just one win away from completing 250 victories on the hard courts with a winning percentage of 65%.

Although the stat is a bit skewed considering most of those wins came on the challenger and future circuits. But it is clear to see that he loves playing on the surface and this week will be a great opportunity for him to progress to the later rounds at a big event.

He did reach the round of 16 at New York and Acapulco earlier in the year but came up against Ugo Humbert and John Isner respectively. His path this week isn’t going to be easier either as he is set to face Daniil Medvedev should he get past his fellow American.

McDonald having a Difficult Season

Currently ranked 271 in the world, McDonald has had a roller-coaster 12 months.

He began 2019 with a losing finalist run at the Dallas Challenger where he lost after being up a set and a break. The 25 year old achieved his first career top 10 wins against Juan Martin del Potro at the Delray Beach Open and reached his first-ever ATP Semifinals. He followed it up with a quarter-final run at the Acapulco Open.

At the time it looked like a matter of weeks before he would break into the top 50.

But after suffering a torn proximal hamstring tendon, he had to undergo the knife and missed the remained of the season. His comeback to the tour wasn’t smooth as he struggled for form initially.

However he has been playing a lot of exhibition events during the season’s suspension and now looks fit and ready.

He has had a tough qualifying campaign too and a first-round win here will not only give him a great confidence boost but also help him greatly to climb back the rankings.

Marcos Giron v Mackenzie McDonald Prediction & Tip

This is likely to be a close contest. Both the players have had a tough qualifying campaign and are looking in good form. The winner may as well be the one who will hold his nerve and makes less mistakes. And because of that reason, McDonald is just a slight favourite.

Tip: McDonald to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
