Denis Shapovalov v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

Shapovalov and Struff have played each other four times, with the German taking a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. Struff won their most recent encounter last year at the Mercedes Cup.

However, it is worth pointing out that their only meeting on hard courts was won by the young Canadian at the Japan Open in 2018.

Shapovalov Beat Cilic On Return To Court

It was only fitting that Denis Shapovalov returned to competitive action with victory over Marin Cilic. After all, the young Canadian’s last win before the tour was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic was also against the Croat at the Open 13 Provence in Marseille.

It was a tidy performance in so many levels by the powerful Canadian who hammered nine aces and only faced one break point in the whole match which lasted 79 minutes, and which he eventually won 6-3 6-3.

Shapovalov has experienced a lot of ups and downs in his embryonic tennis career, but he did have a great end to 2019 and a promising start to launch his 2020 season. However, his form fell off considerably after reaching the quarterfinals in Auckland.

Can that domineering performance over Cilic get his season ticking in the right direction?

Struff Owns De Minaur in Shock Result

It wasn’t Denis Shapovalov who was hitting so big on the opening day of the Western & Southern Open, but Jan-Lennard Struff benefited from playing a series of exhibition matches during lock-down and it proved telling in a 6-2 6-4 win over Australia’s Alex De Minaur.

The 30-year-old German is a perennial hard court danger who can be incredibly tough to beat when his game is firing on all cylinders. He has been slow off the blocks though this year after playing some of his best tennis in 2019.

He went 2-1 at the ATP Cup for Germany, and had the misfortune of facing Novak Djokovic in the first round of Australian Open. Although he ran the Serbian star close in a four set defeat, it was a first round exit that preceded his other one in Rotterdam.

His best result before the tour’s suspension was a quarterfinal in Dubai where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Shapovalov v Struff Prediction & Tip

This is a battle between two of the most powerful hitters in the men’s game. Both players have the ability to produce monstrous serves and this match will likely be defined by a few close points. The overs market is near-certain outcome with all four of their previous meetings going over 21.5 games at least. Expect this one to follow suit.

Tip: Over 21.5 games: 5/6 (bet365)
