Ons Jabeur v Madison Keys Head to Head

This will be the first time that the US Open runner-up Keys will be playing Tunisia’s 39th-ranked Jabeur in a competitive match.

Jabeur Overcomes Stunning First Set Loss

Going into her opening round match at the Cincinnati Open, Jabeur was the favourite against Leylah Fernandez but as we had expected, the match went into three sets. The surprising part was the manner in which Jabeur absolutely collapsed in the first set, getting bagelled by an opponent without too much of an experience.

It looked like it was that very experience which bailed out Jabeur in the end as she fought back to win the next two sets, and claim a place in this second round. Even at the Australian Open earlier this year where she sprung to prominence by making it to the quarterfinal, she endured two three-setter but kept her mental game switched on in both to win the match.

Against Caroline Garcia in that match, she lost the first set in similar circumstances, winning just a game and then completed a 6-2, 6-3 win over the next two. Against Fernandez, it was 6-4, 6-3.

Keys Hasn’t Played Much This Season

One of the very few players to have featured in just two tournaments before the pandemic and only one during the break. And even in that one, at the Credit Bank Invitational which was held on clay in USA, Keys played only a couple of matches.

The rustiness, as a result, could be a factor and more so because Jabeur herself is a slow starter at times and that’s the best time to go after her. If Keys ends up missing that early chance, it might be tough to beat her but Keys could take confidence from two factors.

One, her own record this year and on hard court surfaces has been excellent. She was a finalist at the Brisbane International and then made the third round at the Australian Open.

Secondly, there have been three occasions already this season where Jabeur has won the first set to go on to lose the match – against Garbine Muguruza at Hobart, against Simona Halep in Dubai and against Cori Gauff at Lexington. Given that it’s half of the matches Jabeur has lost this year anyway, it’s a weakness she can look to target.

Ons Jabeur v Madison Keys Prediction & Tip

We expect Jabeur to have bit of an edge despite Keys starting out as a favourite at 2/5 with bet365. However, given the aforementioned differences between the two players, a three-setter looks like a decent bet in this one.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 13/8 (bet365)
