Taylor Fritz v Aljaz Bedene Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Fritz and Bedene at this level.

Fritz Breezed Past Harris

For someone who has been playing exhibition tournaments during the pandemic break and on the hard courts of USA, Fritz was always expected to be in peak condition coming into the Cincinnati Open. What one wouldn’t have bargained for the manner in which he dismantled Lloyd Harris in the first round.

What would have been a surprise for those looking on, might not have been the same for Fritz. He has already said he worked harder than he had ever done during the pandemic break, and is aiming to become the top-ranked American player in the world – Fritz is currently second behind Isner.

Working with coach Paul Annacone, Fritz had been looking to improve on his fitness and that in turn, should hopefully go deeper into the US Open as well.

For now though, he will be looking to ease past Bedene to set up what could be a potentially exciting meeting against Daniil Medvedev (who is facing Marcos Giron in his second round match).

Bedene Came Through Qualifiers to Beat Garin

Having made it to the main draw of the Cincinnati Open, Bedene was drawn to play Cristian Garin in his first round. And while Garin had won two titles this season already, his record on hard courts hadn’t been much to write home about.

Which is why, as we had reckoned in our preview to that match, Bedene pocketed that match in three sets.

Earlier in the tournament, Bedene needed to get past Dennis Novak and Denis Kudla to make it to the main draw, both not at the best of their forms at the moment.

For the first time now in three matches, Bedene plays an opponent who could not just push him but also ease past him if he starts off well. The question is if Bedene can find himself the kind of wherewithal he had shown in defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Rotterdam Open earlier this year.

That was Bedene’s second appearance in a tournament quarterfinal following the Qatar Open earlier in January.

Taylor Fritz v Aljaz Bedene Prediction & Tip

Fritz is an obvious favourite with an offer of 1/3 (bet365) for his victory and 5/6 for a straight-set win. We reckon despite Bedene’s fighting qualities this might not see a third set.

Tip: Fritz to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
