John Isner v John Millman Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times, and Isner has won every time, although each of the matches has been close.

Isner’s run began in Beijing in 2015, and continued in the first round of Roland Garros the following year. Their most recent encounter was in the quarter-finals in Acapulco in 2019, Isner winning on a three-set tie break.

Isner, a Serving and Ace Specialist

Isner is recognised as one of the finest servers in the history of the game, and holds the record for the fastest, and the third-fastest serves ever recorded. He has also served more than 12,000 aces on the ATP tour.

That serving has helped him win 15 career titles, the most prestigious of which was the Miami Open in 2018. His most recent victory came at the hall of Fame Open on home soil last July. Despite that, he has never turned that form into success in Grand Slams – a semi-final at Wimbledon two years ago is the best he has managed.

He began 2020 playing for his country in the ATP Cup, before going onto Auckland, where he lost in the third round. He reached the same stage in Melbourne, but was forced to retire mid-way through his match with Stan Wawrinka because of injury.

He suffered a first round defeat in New York, but did reach the semi-finals in Acapulco, only to lose to compatriot Taylor Fritz.

After playing in several exhibition matches, he beat Hubert Hurkacz of Poland,  the world number 29, in straight sets in the first round on Sunday comparatively easily.

Millman, Australian Number Two

Millman is the current Australian number two, just behind Nick Kyrgios in the world rankings. Like Isner, his main weapon is his serve, but, despite the fact that he has been a pro for 14 years, he has yet to win an ATP title.

The closest he has come has been two finals, first on clay in Hungary in 2018, and then last year, on hard courts as he was beaten by Novak Djokovic at the Japan Open in Tokyo.

He began his year playing for Australia in the ATP Cup, and then lost in the third round in Auckland. He lost at the same stage in Melbourne, but not before pushing Roger Federer all the way in a five-set battle, that was decided on a tie-break.

However, he was then knocked out in the first round in his next two events, in Delray Beach and Acapulco.

Unless his opponent, he has not played in any exhibition games since the resumption of the sport, so his first-round meeting with Adrian Mannarino of France, the world number 38, was his first competitive match since March. Despite, that he came from behind to clinch the match on a third set tie-break.

John Isner v John Millman Prediction & Tip

Isner will start this battle of the big servers the clear favourite, having won all their three previous matches. There are unlikely to be too many long rallies, but the American’s superior returning ability should stand him in good stead.

Tip: Isner to win in straight sets: 6/5 (bet365)
