Catherine Bellis v Tamara Korpatsch Head to Head

Bellis, currently ranked 249th in the world, has never played the 116th-ranked Korpatsch before in her career.

Bellis Continues to Exhibit Promise

While fitness issues nearly nipped Bellis’ career in the bud, she has done well to come back from them this season. Before the pandemic struck, Bellis showed improvement with each passing tournament.

After getting knocked out in the first round at Auckland, she made the second round in Hobart before coming up with her best ever Australian Open and joint-best Grand Slam showing of her career. This, Bellis did, by making it to the third round with wins over Tatjana Maria and world number 22 Karolina Muchova before falling to Elise Mertens in the third round.

On the return of tennis post the pandemic break, Bellis registered back to back straight set wins to reach the quarterfinal of the Lexington Open and then made it through the qualifiers at the Cincinnati Open to win her opener. She managed to stretch Aryna Sabalenka to three sets before bowing out in the second round there.

Bellis, who was once the WTA Newcomer of the Year, has one $125k title under her belt which came in 2016. Since then, however, the grind and fitness problems had gotten the better of the young American before she looks to have turned a corner.

Question now is if she can go farther than round three here; with possible matches against Jennifer Brady and Karolina Pliskova over the next two rounds, things are about to get very tough. Which is why, a quick opening round win might be the need of the hour.

Korpatsch in Maiden Grand Slam Main Draw

A slew of withdrawals from the US Open this season has allowed Germany’s Korpatsch make it to the main draw without needing to go through the qualifiers. Her previous best was a third round of qualifiers in 2018 at the French Open.

Korpatsch comes into this tournament with barely any form though. Sure, she played during the pandemic break, featuring in the DTB Pro Germany Series where she won a plethora of matches but in the four tournaments before that, at the ITF and WTA level, the German had lost all four matches.

This included the first round of the qualifiers at the Lyon Open as well.

To add to her woes, Korpatsch is predominantly a clay court player, having won all nine of her ITF titles on that surface too. All in all, it won’t be that easy for Korpatsch to turn things upside down for Bellis.

Catherine Bellis v Tamara Korpatsch Prediction & Tip

An easy win for Bellis can be expected if she is fully fit. A straight-set win for the American expected here with Korpatsch needing to wait some time before she registers her first main draw win at a grand slam.

Tip: Bellis to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
