Sumit Nagal v Bladley Klahn Head to Head

Nagal and Klahn have never played each other before this in a competitive match.

Nagal at His Career-Best

Ranked 122nd in the world at the moment, this is Nagal’s best ever singles ranking and it is thanks to his run to the third round at the Prague Challenger recently. He won a couple of three-setters before falling to Stan Wawarinka in the third.

The problem with the result is it came on clay, while Nagal’s performances on hard court this season have been underwhelming. In the five matches he played before the tennis season went on a break, Nagal lost four of those, including at the first round of his home tournament in the Pune Open.

Overall too, clay is a more preferred surface for the Indian, although he did give an excellent account of himself at the US Open last year. Playing Roger Federer in the first round, Nagal took a set off him before succumbing to the much higher pedigree of the Swiss maestro.

Now he is playing against an opponent who is ranked in the same ball-park as him, in what will be his second Grand Slam appearance – can he win his maiden match at a major?

Klahn’s Own Recent Struggles

Unlike Nagal, clay isn’t Klahn’s most favourite surface. This year he has played all his matches on hard and indoor hard courts, while playing five matches on clay last season, Klahn lost all of them.

On the other hand, Klahn started off this season with a third round appearance at the Canberra Challenger, and the quarterfinal at the Newport Beach Challenger but since then the form has deteriorated.

One win at the Dallas Challenger was followed by a tough loss, and the failure to qualify for the New York Open and another opening defeat at the Indian Wells Challenger had him going into the pandemic break without much to show.

During the break, Klahn played just one match and it came at the Grand Slam Tennis Tours Matchplay competition where he lost to Marcos Giron. Rustiness could become an issue.

Sumit Nagal v Bladley Klahn Prediction & Tip

Nagal’s poor hard court record faces Klahn’s underwhelming form and rustiness. We will be backing Nagal here for the sheer confidence he carries into this tournament following his performance in Prague but only just.

Tip: Nagal to win: 10/11 (bet365)
