Dusan Lajovic v Egor Gerasimov Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 30-year old Serb, and the man from Belarus, who is three years younger.

Lajovic, Monte Carlo Finalist Last Year

Although he turned pro in 2007, Lajovic had to wait until last year before making his breakthrough, reaching his first Masters final in Monte Carlo before losing to Fabio Fognini. He then won his maiden ATP title in Croatia, four months later.

Both of those events were on clay, his preferred surface, but he showed he can also perform on hard courts by winning the doubles title at the Chengdu Open last September with compatriot Nikola Cacic.

His record in Grand Slams is modest, with his best being a fourth-round appearance in Paris in 2014. The furthest he has reached in New York was in 2018, when he made the third round here.

Lajovic’s 2020 got off to a great start when he helped Serbia win the inaugural ATP Cup. He then reached the third round in Melbourne, but lost to the world number 14, Diego Schwartzman.

A member of the ill-fated Adria Tour, he was one of the fortunate ones who did not get the coronavirus but was then defeated in the first round of the Cincinnati Open by Pablo Carreno-Busta of Spain.

Gerasimov’s Breakthrough Year Came in 2019

Gerasimov only really made a name for himself on the senior ATP tour in the latter part of 2019, having plied his trade for years on the junior circuits, where he has won 9 singles titles, the most recent of which came in Guzzini, Italy, last July.

He then qualified for the US Open, the first time he had made the main draw of a Grand Slam, and reached the second-round before losing to Diego Schwartzman.

Emboldened, he then reached the semi-final in St. Petersburg, having come through qualifying first, and then reached the quarter-final in Chengdu, enabling him to break into the top 100 in the world for the first time.

This year he got to the second round in Melbourne, and then reached his first ATP final in Pune, losing to the Czech Jiri Vesely in straight sets.

He also reached the quarter-finals in Marseilles, but was beaten in the first round of the Cincinnati Open by the American qualifier Jeffrey John Wolf.

Dusan Lajovic v Egor Gerasimov Prediction & Tip

Whilst both of these men came to prominence in 2019, Lajovic has the much longer pedigree, and has more experience than his opponent at this level. That should be enough for him to make a winning start in New York.
