Alison Riske v Tatjana Maria Head to Head
There have been five meetings between Riske and Maria, and all of them have been won by Riske. Three of these matches came at the ITF level, before they met for the first time at the San Jose Open in 2015 and Riske needed three sets to get past Maria. In their previous meeting at Hertogenbosch in 2018, Riske won in straight sets.

The pandemic affected – and is still is affecting – different people in different manner. Tennis players have had their own issues but it might go on to become particularly harsh on those finding their peak, especially at a later stage of their careers.
30-year-old Riske was building up some nice steam over the past 12 or so months with a title win at Hertogenbosch last season and with back to back top performances in Grand Slam competitions. Last season she made the quarterfinal at Wimbledon, her best showing at any major while earlier this year she won three matches in a row to enter round four at the Australian Open.
It took the world number one Ash Barty three sets to stall Riske on her tracks.
Unfortunately for her, the season was suspended soon after that and now on her return, Riske was beaten in the first round of the Cincinnati Open by Amanda Anisimova. She has a chance to get things back to where they were with a straightforward draw till at least the third round with a potential encounter then against Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova in rounds three and four.

Maria’s Not Played Since March
Unlike some of the other players who have been involved in some playing capacity over the pandemic, featuring in local exhibition competitions, Maria hasn’t played a single match since her second round exit at the Monterrey Open.
Before that there were another second round exit at Acapulco, while she did make it as far as the quarterfinal at the Newport Beach Open as well. Unfortunately for Maria, that’s as far as she has gone with a couple of semifinals to boot in Nottingham and Guadalajara last year.
With a career-best showing of second round at the US Open as well, Maria will need to really play out of her skin to try and conquer her more pedigreed opponent, especially given her own rustiness.

Riske shouldn’t have too many difficulties in making it to the second round despite her early Cincinnati loss earlier this week. A straight-set effort looks likely.
