David Goffin v Reilly Opelka Head to Head

This is the third meeting between the players, with the head-to-head tied at 1-1. Goffin won their first encounter in five sets at the 2017 Australian Open opener, where as Opelka won another tight match in the round of 16 of the ATP 500 at Basel last year.

Goffin Still In Search For Deep Run At Major

Belgian David Goffin has been on the tour for most of the last decade and exhibited promise, talent and consistency. He reached a career-high ranking of number seven in the world in 2017, before injuries led to breaks from the tour and inconsistent form, and saw him drop to number 30 in the rankings in 2018.

The gritty Goffin did well in 2019 to make the finals of the ATP 500 at Halle and the Masters 1000 finals at Cincinnati and return to the top in the ATP rankings. 2020 has been a mixed short season for the Belgian, who will be ruing not doing better at the Western & Southern Open this week, losing to German Struff in three sets.

Goffin has been around on the tour for a while, and has all it takes to beat the best out there, but has not managed to get past the quarter-finals of a major, with this ATP finals showing at the O2 arena in London, still being his best performance.

The Belgian will be hoping the 2020 US Open will be the slam where he makes inroads like never before.

Big Serving Opelka Looking For Strong Showing at Home Slam

It has been a promising 2019-2020 for young American Reilly Opelka, who is the tallest ever player on the ATP tour, making his serve one of his most powerful weapons.

He won his maiden ATP final last February in 2019 at the New York Open and had a consistent season thereafter. While 2020 got off to an indifferent start for him, with early losses at Adelaide, Melbourne and at the New York Open, he did well to recover and win the ATP 250 title at Delray Beach, prior to the pandemic.

Opelka had a good start to the week at the Western & Southern Open,  serving 50 aces in the first three rounds, as he has defeated Cameron Norrie, Diego Schwartzman and Matteo Berrettini with fine serving. Opelka was on serve in the quarter-final against Stefanos Tsitsipas, before withdrawing with an injury unfortunately.

It remains to be seen how soon the young American recovers, but a healthy Opelka will be hoping for a good showing at the US Open.

David Goffin v Reilly Opelka Prediction & Tip

Both matches between these players have been tight and gone the distance and there is no reason to believe why this will not again. A clash of contrasting styles awaits; the gritty Goffin and the monstrous serving Opelka. The game will largely depend on how well Opelka serves, and how he has recovered from the niggle from this week.

Opelka has promised of late, and can be troubling to the best of players. However, Goffin has more experience on the big stage, and the better all-round game.

Another long match on the cards, with Goffin pulling through in five sets

Tip: Goffin to win in five sets: 5/1 (bet365)
