Kristina Mladenovic v Hailey Baptiste Head to Head
This is the second time Mladenovic and Baptiste will be facing off in a competitive match with the first one having come in the 2019 Washington Open. Baptiste had taken a set off Mladenovic in that second round encounter before the Frenchwoman won in three sets.

The world number 43 has played in two tournaments after the pandemic ended; at the Palermo Open on clay and at Lexington on a hard court surface. It started off with a first round loss at Palermo before she surprised Anastasija Sevastova in the opening round of the Cincinnati Open despite entering the match as the second-favourite player.
And even in the second round against Elise Mertens, Mladenovic showed enough mettle before going down in three sets.
There are two ways of looking at her performances. One, obviously, she has lost two of the three matches she’s played in since returning from the break. The other should give her more confidence.
On hard courts, where it matters heading into the US Open, Mladenovic has had a couple of decent matches under her belt. Her draw is a helpful one too, with Petra Martic as her potential third round opponent, and Yulia Putintseva or Marketa Vondrousova in the fourth.

Baptiste Improving Steadily
Having begun her professional career in 2018, Baptiste was ranked 790th in the world that year before ending the previous season ranked 231st. And the reason for that improvement was down to her showing on the ITF circuit, when she won three titles on it.
Two of those three titles came on hard court surfaces, which had in turn resulted her getting a chance to play in the Australian Open qualifiers earlier this season. And later in the season she made it to the World TeamTennis, featuring for the New York Empire.
With multiple withdrawals, it has now allowed her a direct entry into the first round of the US Open, her first ever main draw appearance and win or lose, she has already shown we are going to see a lot of her in times to come.
