Sakkari Will Be a Force To Reckon With

Over the last two years, there has been a steady improvement in the game of the 25-year-old Maria Sakkari, who produced her best Grand Slam performance at the Australian Open earlier this year, reaching the fourth round for the first time in majors.

Putting the disappointments of Brisbane and Adelaide behind, Sakkari dispatched Margarita Gasparyan, Nao Hibino and Madison Keys in the first three rounds in Melbourne without much difficulty, but then went down fighting to Petra Kvitova in an entertaining three-setter.

Next up, was St. Petersburg Open, where she reached the semifinals by beating top seed Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinals but couldn’t go through to the final after suffering a come-from-behind defeat at the hands of Elyna Rybakina.

Sakkari also reached the Round of 16 in Qatar before the pause due to the pandemic.

Post-lockdown, the Greek made a disappointing return, going down to Karolina Pliskova in straight sets in Palermo.

But she hit form just before the U.S. Open at the Cincinnati Open, defeating Cori Gauff and Yulia Putintseva in straight sets in the first two rounds and then rallying from a set down to stun Serena Williams in a three-set thriller in the Round of 16. Britain’s Johanna Konta halted her progress in the quarterfinal.

The 21st-ranked Sakkari has a 12-8 win-loss record this year and will be a force to reckon with at the U.S. Open. If she goes through the first three rounds, she could be playing Serena Williams once again in the fourth round of the tournament.

First up, however, she will be up against a rival she is yet to beat.

Can Voegele Pull off an Upset Win?

Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele, who reached her best-ever ranking of 42 in 2013, has never been a real threat on the Tour.

Ever since turning pro in 2006, Voegele has just scored two top-10 wins, one in 2013 against Caroline Wozniacki and the other over Sloane Stephens at the Indian Wells Open last year.

The 113th-ranked 30-year-old is yet to win a singles WTA title and her best performance at Grand Slams came at the French Open in 2013, when she reached the third round of the tournament.

At Flushing Meadows, she has been a part of the main draw eight times since 2008 but has reached the second round only once in 2009. Last year, she failed to go past the qualifying rounds at the U.S. Open.

This month, Voegele featured in the qualifiers of the Cincinnati Open, but was beaten by Arantxa Rus.

Voegele, who is 8-6 this year, has a 2-0 record over Sakkari, but beating the Greek will be a massive task for the Swiss.
