After Masters Miss,  Agut Hoping For Strong Slam

Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut has been among the more consistent players on the tour in the last season and a half. 2019 was a phenomenal season for Agut, breaking into the top ten in the ATP rankings, being a semi-finalist at Wimbledon, and winning the Davis Cup title for Spain.

On a personal note, it was a difficult end to the year, as his mother’s shock demise in 2018, was followed by that of his father in late 2019.

2020 got off to a strong start, with him winning all his matches at the ATP Cup, but an unexpected third round loss to Marin Cilic brought about a drop in form through the rest of the season until the pandemic break.

Agut has returned to the tour in good form this week, defeating Daniil Medvedev at the quarter-finals of the Western & Southern Open and being two points from victory, serving for the match in the semi-finals against Novak Djokovic.

The Spaniard is in good touch coming into the US Open, and will be hoping for a favorable run, in the fortnight ahead.

Sandgren Looking To Upset Consistent Agut

American Tennys Sandgren spent a number of years on the ATP Challenger and ITF Futures tours before making his debut on the ATP main tour in late 2016. Sandgren broke into the top 100 of the world in 2017 and a good showing at the 2018 Australian Open defeating Stanislas Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem, saw him make his first major quarter-final.

Sandgren went on to win his first ATP title in Auckland in 2019 and reached a career-high ranking just outside the top 40 in the world. Sandgren made the quarter-finals again this year at the Australian Open, and will be best remembered for letting go of seven match points in the fourth set against Roger Federer, to eventually lose in the decider.

The American got off to a fair start this week at the Western & Southern Open, until he ran into Novak Djokovic, who won the match comfortably.

Roberto Bautista Agut v Tennys Sandgren Prediction & Tip

This makes for another exciting first round clash between the gritty Spaniard and the powerful American. While Sandgren will miss the fans at his home slam, he will look to bring his powerful serve and forehand against the Spaniard with the consistent all-round game.

Agut has been in good form of late and his defense and determination is difficult to break. Agut begins as the favorite and can be expected to wrap this up in three close sets.

Tip: Agut to win in straight sets: 6/5 (bet365)
