Angelique Kerber v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

Five years ago, in their only meeting so far, Kerber defeated the Australian in straight sets in the second round of the French Open.

Rustiness Will be a Factor for Kerber

The 2016 U.S. Open champion made a last-minute decision to travel to the U.S. for the championship this year. The 32-year-old German, ranked 23 in the world, has not played a single match since being knocked out by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the fourth round of the Australian Open earlier this year.

A former World No. 1, Kerber won the Australian Open and the U.S. Open in 2016 and added a third major by winning the Wimbledon title in 2018. Since that success two years ago, the Rio Olympics silver medallist has struggled with form, failing to reach the quarterfinals of any of the majors.

Last year at the Flushing Meadows, Kerber was knocked out of the first round by Kristina Mladenovic. It was the second time in three years that Kerber exited without winning a match. In 2017, Kerber became only the second U.S. Open defending champion to be knocked out in the first round, when she lost to Naomi Osaka.

One of the most consistent performers on the WTA Tour, Kerber has won 12 singles titles. She comes into the tournament with a 4-3 record in 2020.

If Kerber progresses in the tournament, she could be meeting 13th seed Alison Riske in a potential third-round matchup, and could face Karolina Pliskova in the fourth round.

Her biggest test, however, will be to get off to a good start against Tomljanovic.

Tomljanovic Has Losing Record in 2020

World No. 57 Ajla Tomljanovic may be coming into the contest against Kerber with more court time in August, but both her matches ended in disappointing losses.

While the Croatian-born Aussie was blown away by Yulia Putintseva in the first round of the Top Seed Open, she did put up some resistance at the Cincinnati Open, taking the first set against Veronika Kudermetova before going down in three in the first round of the tournament.

The 27-year-old Tomljanovic has a 5-8 losing record in 2020, having exited most of the competitions after winning the first round. At the Australian Open, too, Tomljanovic shocked Anastasija Sevastova 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, but fell to Garbine Muguruza in a fiercely contested three-set second-round encounter.

In the majors, her best performance came at the French Open in 2014, when she reached the fourth round. At the U.S. Open, she has never gone past the second round. It was at this stage she was beaten by Annett Kontaveit last year.

Angelique Kerber v Ajla Tomljanovic Prediction & Tip

Expect Tomljanovic to put up a great fight, but Kerber should edge past the Aussie in three.

Tip: Kerber to win in tree sets: 7/2 (bet365)
