Viktoria Kuzmova v Caty McNally Head to Head

Having begun the season a first round drubbing at the hands of Cori Gauff at the Auckland Open, Kuzmova won her first match of the season at Hobart but then went down to Elise Mertens in the second round. An opening round loss at the Australian Open followed soon after before she fell in her opener at the St. Petersburg Open to mark a very underwhelming start to 2020.
It was at Lyon, which was her next appearance, Kuzmova finally managed to win a match and then doubled the tally by making it to the quarterfinal there.
Kuzmova, who is yet to win a WTA title in her career, performed admirably during the pandemic break in a couple of tournaments – the Bratislava Open and Privabanka Open – reaching the finals at both. However, those competitions were held on clay and having failed to qualify for the Cincinnati Open when the Slovakian fell in the qualifiers, it would get darn tough for her going into the first round here at Flushing Meadows.

McNally’s Only Win Came at Australian Open
If one counts the WTA $125k event at Indian Wells, McNally has played in five WTA tournaments this season and holds an appalling 1-5 win-loss record. Her only win came at the Australian Open first round, having managed to reach the main draw after winning three qualifiers.
McNally defeated Samantha Stosur in her first round match before losing to Shuai Zhang and then followed it up with three successive first round ousters. These include defeats to Ons Jabeur and Alize Cornet on her comeback to the circuit following the pandemic break t the Lexington Open and Cincinnati Open respectively
The trouble for McNally isn’t just those losses but the manner of defeats too – losing easily in straight sets.
